Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United are clubs to watch in the finals days of the January transfer window. Erling Haaland has signed a bumper new extension at Manchester City, while it appears that Benjamin Sesko will not be an option for the Gunners as they target a new striker.

Mikel Arteta is also targeting a new midfielder, with Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi appearing to be set on the Emirates over Anfield or with Man City at the Etihad.

Arne Slot’s Reds continue to negotiate with soon-to-be out-of-contract trio Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk, with the right-back linked with a possible free transfer to Real Madrid.

While Manchester United are looking to sell Marcus Rashford, Kyle Walker could be on his way out of Man City, though, after informing Pep Guardiola of a desire to explore options away from the club and Milan and Inter are battling for the right back.

Elsewhere, Chelsea, currently in a rotten spell of form under Enzo Maresca, could negotiate a swap deal with Bayern Munich winger Mathys Tel, inserting out-of-favour striker Christopher Nkunku into a deal.

Pep Guardiola admits disbelief over length of Erling Haaland deal

Harry Latham-Coyle

Pep Guardiola admits he could scarcely believe the news Erling Haaland has signed a new nine-and-half year contract at Manchester City.

The prolific Norway striker, who has scored 111 goals in 126 appearances for City, has committed himself to the reigning Premier League champions until 2034.

It is a deal of unprecedented length in the English domestic game and City manager Guardiola, who recently agreed his own two-year extension, thought he had misheard when told the details by director of football Txiki Begiristain.

Erling Haaland signs astonishing new deal

Harry Latham-Coyle

Erling Haaland has signed a 10-season contract to keep him at Manchester City until he is 33.

The striker, whose previous deal was set to expire in 2027, has put pen to paper on a seven-year extension in what is almost certainly the most lucrative contract City have given any player.

And the Norwegian, who has scored 111 goals in 125 games since his 2022 arrival from Borussia Dortmund, said he was delighted to agree to spend almost all of the rest of his career at City.

Manchester United hopeful of sealing Viktor Gyokeres deal despite Arsenal interest

Miguel Delaney

Manchester United are hopeful of holding off competition for Sporting's Viktor Gyokeres to secure a deal in the summer.

Arsenal are understood to have raised the striker in discussions over a badly-needed forward signing for January, having brought forward plans from the summer after the ACL injury suffered by Gabriel Jesus.

Mikel Arteta this week admitted they are looking, and Gyokeres has been raised along with options such as Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and Brighton's Evan Ferguson. Arsenal have not seriously pursued PSG's Randal Kolo Muani yet this window.

The Liverpool transfer problem their Premier League title rivals wish they had

11:00

,

Pete Hall

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia would have been a nice luxury to have, but in the cold light of day, Arne Slot would have struggled to even fit the Paris Saint-Germain-bound Georgian wizard into his multi-faceted lineup in the coming months.

After Diogo Jota having stepped off the bench to earn Liverpool a vital 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, where defeat could have left the gap at the top a nerve-jangling four points, Slot flexed his squad muscles once more.

The new Liverpool boss’ in-game management has, so far, belied his inexperience on our shores. In 16 of 31 matches, the Reds have not held the lead at the interval and still stand on the precipice of a second Premier League title, at a canter. It helps when he can turn to game-changers of Jota's ilk in reserve.

Yet, the transfer rumours continue to circulate. But if Jota, when fit, cannot get a start, signing another forward would only give Slot a headache he does not need to create for himself.

Manchester United set transfer demand for Alejandro Garnacho to Napoli based on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s fee

10:30

,

Miguel Delaney

Napoli are pressing ahead with a move for Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho, as they seek to reshape the attack after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's expected move to Paris Saint-Germain.

The Old Trafford hierarchy are willing to listen to all offers this January, even for homegrown products, due to the club's highly restricted circumstances with PSR. Ruben Amorim wants to begin to overhaul of the squad, but can't without sales.

Napoli have already started some work on a potential deal, and Garnacho is understood to be open to a move to the Italian club, although personal terms are yet to be agreed. The player's pace fits manager Antonio Conte's ideal for how he wants the team to play.

Manchester City close in on Omar Marmoush as forward left out of Eintracht squad

09:30

,

Harry Latham-Coyle

Omar Marmoush seems on the verge of joining Manchester City as his current club Eintracht Frankfurt confirmed it was in talks with City and said the Egyptian striker would probably leave.

Marmoush was not in the squad as Frankfurt beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the Bundesliga but joined his teammates on the field after the game for an apparent farewell as fans cheered.

"I've said often before that we're in discussions with a club. In the end, it's Manchester City and we've really been in close contact with them for one or two days now," sporting director Markus Krosche told broadcaster DAZN ahead of the game.

A move to City would be a "huge opportunity" for Marmoush, he added."We'll see how it develops in the coming hours and perhaps days, but there is now a very high probability that he will be leaving us."

Harry Latham-Coyle

Georgian forward Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has joined Paris Saint Germain from Serie A side Napoli on a deal until 2029, the Ligue 1 club announced on Friday.

Neither side disclosed the financial details of the deal, but media reports said the French champions have paid a 70 million euro (£59m) fee plus add-ons for the 23-year-old.

"PSG are delighted to announce the signing of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia," the Parisian club said in a statement.

"The 23-year-old winger, who will wear the number 7 shirt, becomes the first Georgian player in the club's history."

Kvaratskhelia arrives in the French capital after failing to reach an agreement with Napoli to extend his contract, which was due to run until 2027, with the winger requesting his exit last week.

The Gunners have been widely linked with Viktor Gyokeres and Dusan Vlahovic during the window, while Bryan Mbeumo reportedly remains another forward target.

However, David Ornstein has claimed that Benjamin Sesko is not expected to move during this window, with RB Leipzig likely to refuse to sell.

In addition, Thomas Frank has insisted that it is hugely unlikely that Mbeumo will move.

Gyokeres has a €100m release clause, while Vlahovic continues to be the most linked striker.

Arsenal’s search for a new striker may have hit an early stumbling block, as David Ornstein has claimed that Benjamin Sesko is not expected to move during this window, with RB Leipzig likely to refuse to sell.

Speaking on YouTube to Arsenal fan show ‘Highbury Squad’, Ornstein said: “My information is there are no talks for Benjamin Sesko, and he’s not expected to move in thus transfer window.

“He’s high on their [Arsenal’s] recruitment list, they’ve explored it in the past.

“He’s really important to Leipzig at the moment. They don’t have an intention of selling him,” added Ornstein.

Premier League clubs avoid PSR charges for 2023/24 but one team still at risk

06:00

,

Mike Jones

All 20 Premier League sides have avoided charges relating to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) for the 2023/24 season after the league deemed every club to have been financially compliant.

PSR stipulates that clubs cannot post losses of more than £105m over a three-year period, with most clubs required to submit their accounts for the 2023/24 season by 31 December.

This year, the Premier League has adjudged that all clubs have adhered to the rules – in 2024, the league charged both Everton and Nottingham Forest with PSR breaches, with the Merseyside club later being given an eight-point reduction, while Forest were docked four points.

Ruben Amorim confident that Alejandro Garnacho can have bright Man Utd future

Friday 17 January 2025 20:30

,

Mike Jones

While Garnacho is said to be Napoli’s top target in their hunt for a new winger, Ruben Amorim has said it is “clear” Alejandro Garnacho can have a bright future at Manchester United.

Sunday’s FA Cup match at Arsenal, which United went on to win in a penalty shoot-out, was the first time Garnacho had made Amorim’s starting XI since the 3-2 home defeat to Nottingham Forest on December 7.

During that time the 20-year-old, who has eight goals in 30 appearances this term, had been left out of the squad entirely for the Manchester derby, while speculation has increased that United could be open to selling the academy product to help ease concerns around profit and sustainability rules.

Kyle Walker latest

Friday 17 January 2025 18:21

Mike Jones

There haven’t been any real developments of note regarding Walker’s situation, though he was left out of the City squad for their draw against Brentford.

Walker has been heavily linked to AC Milan, though some reports suggest that Milan will have to choose between signing him or Marcus Rashford.

In addition, Walker has been linked with a six-month loan to Real Madrid, who need cover in defence after injuries to David Alaba, Eder Militao and Dani Carvajal.

Kyle Walker’s fall is the symbol of Man City decline

Friday 17 January 2025 18:08

,

Mike Jones

A couple of years ago, Pep Guardiola took a phrase to a new dimension. Or a new era, given that it was a prediction for the 2050s. You’ll never beat Kyle Walker? "He will always have pace,” the Manchester Citymanager argued. “Kyle at 60 years old will be the fastest player in this room.”

Guardiola used to thank the full-back’s parents for his genes. Walker, it seemed, was a physiological freak. As others slowed down, as evidence sometimes emerged that his lifestyle was scarcely ideal, he was still the man for a race: with Vinicius Jr, or Kylian Mbappe, or the fastest forward anyone could find.

Until, it transpired, the name of Walker’s podcast felt ever more inappropriate. It was not merely that roadrunners like Adama Traore and Timo Werner could suddenly beat Kyle Walker; it was the ease with which they sped past him, the distance they opened up in the blink of an eye, the way lesser athletes found themselves in the unusual position of going past him.
