Clubs across the continent are in the market for January transfer deals as they look to strengthen their squads for the second half of the 2024/25 season with titles, European football and survival all on the line.

Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City are all rumoured to be circling new arrivals as they battle it out in the Premier League while the window could see some big exits confirmed with Trent Alexander-Arnold negotiating a possible free transfer to Real Madrid and Manchester United open to selling Marcus Rashford. Randal Kolo Muani is said to be one option for United, who look likely to miss out on Viktor Gyokeres this month, while they also like PSG left-back Nuno Mendes but may shockingly lose Kobbie Mainoo as Chelsea circle.

One of the more intriguing sagas is the fate of Dani Olmo who could be left in limbo is Barcelona fail in their attempts to re-register him. The Spanish giants are battling LaLiga over finanical issues which could mean Olmo needs to find a new club and there are plenty of teams, Arsenal and Chelsea included, monitoring the situation.

And across the rest of the English top-flight, clubs are sticking to PSR regulations and tight budgets as they look to find cut-price deals to bolster their squads.

15:58

Mike Jones

Real Madrid have been heavily linked with a move for Trent Alexander-Arnold but it’s another Liverpool defender that they have reportedly turned down the opportunity to sign.

Virgil van Dijk was ‘offered to Real Madrid’ by the player’s agent, according to Spanish outlet Relevo, but the Spanish club have declined as they look at other players more suited to their project.

Van Dijk is a free agent in the summer and yet to agree a new contract with Liverpool. His agent is said to have contacted Madrid officials to inform them the 33-year-old was keen on a move to the Bernabeu, especially knowing the team have struggled with injuries at centre-back to David Alaba and Eder Militao, but Madrid refused to take up the option.

15:43

Mike Jones

Viktor Gyokeres is set to stay at Sporting CP this winter, with negotiations to buy him from the Portuguese club being delayed until the summer, meaning Manchester United will need to look elsewhere to solve their striker issue this January.

Gyokeres has plundered 30 goals for Sporting this season and attracted attention all across Europe but Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb are saying he won’t be leaving Portugal this month.

United, with former Sporting boss Ruben Amorim at the helm, are known to be interested in the Swedish, ex-Coventry star, while the likes of Man City, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are also thought to be considering bids.

Julen Lopetegui sacked by West Ham with Graham Potter lined up as replacement

15:36

Mike Jones

West Ham have sacked manager Julen Lopetegui after the heavy defeat to Manchester City left the club fearing a relegation battle.

The 4-1 loss at the Etihad Stadium followed a dreadful performance against Liverpool at the London Stadium, prompting a hostile atmosphere with loud boos heard at half and full time.

A club statement read: “The first half of the 2024/25 season has not aligned with the Club’s ambitions and the Club has therefore taken action in line with its objectives.”

The Hammers, who also confirmed Lopetegui’s staff have departed the club, including Assistant Head Coach Pablo Sanz, Head of Performance Oscar Caro, Head Analyst Juan Vicente Peinado, Fitness Coach Borja De Alba and Technical Coach Edu Rubio.

The Hammers have been stuck in the bottom half all season and while they are clear of the relegation zone with other clubs struggling, there have been few hopeful signs under Lopetegui.

15:13

Mike Jones

Juventus have offered to swap Dusan Vlahovic for Joshua Zirkzee as part of a January transfer move according to talkSPORT.

Zirkee has only scored three Premier League goals since his arrival at Old Trafford and is in the firing line as one of the squad players underforming.

The Dutchman signed for £36.5m in the summer but could make an early exit if a swap deal for Vlahovic can be arranged. Vlahovic has just 18 months left on his Juve contract in Turin and the Italian giants hope to benefit from his exit.

The Serbia international is the club’s top scorer this season with 12 goals in all competitions and has the ability to lead the line for United.

Arsenal in race for Nico Williams and Lee Kang In

14:38

Luke Baker

A couple of Arsenal nuggets from David Ornstein of The Athletic. Firstly, the Gunners are looking at highly-rated Athletic Bilbao and Spain forward Nico Williams.

Mikel Arteta would love to sign Williams during this window but finances make it unlikely and the player himself is not agitating to leave Bilbao. His release clause €60m (although it fluctuates with inflation) and would need to be paid in full, meaning a summer move is more likely.

Arsenal face competition to sign the 22-year-old, as Chelsea are high on his list of suitors, while Liverpool looked into the viability of a deal last summer.

The Gunners may also be interested in PSG’s South Korean forward Lee Kang In. The 23-year-old is open to a new challenge and Barcelona’s interest may force Arsenal to come forward, having previously expressed interest although the price (at least double the €22m PSG paid to sign him from Mallorca in 2023) is considered off-putting.

14:14

Luke Baker

Crystal Palace are looking at a move for Millwall winger Romain Esse, who is performing well in the Championship this season.

The 19-year-old Esse has scored four times and assisted once in 24 starts, and Palace are now willing to take a risk on him says the South London Press.

Sporting director Dougie Freedman is believed to be an admirer of the youngster and wants to make him a top priority in Janaury.

The latest in the Marcus Rashford saga – the forward’s brother and agent are in Italy today talking to AC Milan about a potential loan move. The Italian club are keen to understand the conditions for a deal that could be loan with an option to buy and they’ve made the England international their top target for this window.

Man City eye £50m Egypt forward as belated Julian Alvarez replacement

13:29

Luke Baker

Manchester City want to sign Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush to bolster their forward line, although they believe it will be difficult to sign the Egypt international this month.

Marmoush has scored 18 goals and contributed 11 assists already this season but with Eintracht challenging for a Champions League place, City are conscious it could be hard to persuade the Bundesliga high-flyers to sell.

The 25-year-old, who might cost up to £50m, could be a belated replacement for Julian Alvarez, who was sold to Atletico Madrid in the summer for a fee that could rise to £82m.

Liverpool have also been said to be interested in Marmoush in recent weeks.

Manchester United face stumbling blocks in chase of key transfer target Nuno Mendes

13:12

Luke Baker

Manchester United need a sale in order to meet Paris Saint-Germain’s €60m valuation of Nuno Mendes, with Ruben Amorim and the new INEOS leadership keen to start a badly-desired overhaul.

The 22-year-old left-back has been targeted as a key first signing to give balance to the team, but the Old Trafford hierarchy are currently short on the salary offer as well as the transfer fee.

The situation reflects how difficult this crucial first window is for Amorim, with many at United openly talking about how much business needs to be done but how little money there is to spend amid Profit and Sustainability Rule restrictions. The club have essentially let it be known that they will listen to offers for almost any player, including popular homegrown talents such as Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho. Such reports have dominated the first few days of the window, only showing how stark the situation is.

Chelsea chasing Kobbie Mainoo

12:51

Luke Baker

Chelsea are at the top of the list of clubs who want to sign Kobbie Mainoo should he depart Manchester United.

The Daily Mail are reporting that there is a stalemate in negotiations over a new deal between the midfielder and the Old Trafford hierarchy despite Mainoo having two-and-a-half years left on his current contract.

If United do sell the player it would be financially beneficial given any proceeds from a sale would go down as pure profit on the accounts.

The fans would not be pleased as Mainoo is a homegrown talent that broke into the first team under Erik ten Hag and has continued to impress.

Man Utd exploring deal for Kolo Muani

12:14

Luke Baker

With news that Viktor Gyokeres is unlikely to leave Sporting this month, Manchester United are exploring other striker options with Randal Kolo Muani apparently high on their list.

According to David Ornstein at The Athletic, United and Tottenham are actively exploring a deal to sign Kolo Muani on loan from PSG.

The France striker is also wanted by Juventus and Ornstein says they are the leading contenders to capture his signature, with the France striker short of game-time at PSG but regarded by his suitorsas one of the best versatile attackers currently on the market.

Kolo Muani, who moved to PSG from Eintracht Frankfurt in 2023 for €90m and is under contract until 2028, has played just 14 times for the French side this season, providing two goals and an assist.

Luke Baker

According to our own Richard Jolly, Manchester City are interested in Abdukodir Khusanov although the Lens defender is viewed as a potential signing for the future, rather than a player who would be likely to break into the first 11 now.

The 20-year-old Uzbekistan international is around a decade younger than three of City’s current centre-backs, in John Stones, Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji.

West Ham eye Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall

11:14

Luke Baker

West Ham are considering a move for Chelsea’s Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, potentially on loan.

The east London club have pressed on with business despite the current uncertainty over the managerial position, with Julen Lopetegui continuing to take training even as Graham Potter has been in negotiations to succeed him. Dewsbury-Hall has emerged as an option, after limited impact at Stamford Bridge so far.

The 26-year-old arrived from Leicester City in the summer having worked with Enzo Maresca at the Championship winners, but has so far only made five league appearances, with most of his time being restricted to the Europa Conference League.

Tottenham and Aston Villa in for Milan Skriniar

10:57

Luke Baker

Tottenham and Aston Villa are interested in signing Milan Skriniar, with PSG happy to let the Slovakian defender leave this month.

The 29-year-old has made just five appearances this season and the saga could be resolved by the end of the week, according to French newspaper L’Equipe.

Galatasary have been considered the front-runners to sign Skriniar but his salary could prove a problem for the Turkish side, leaving Spurs and Villa well placed to add to their centre-back options instead. Napoli have also been linked but he may not be an automatic starter there.

Cristiano Ronaldo ‘has options’ and desperate for Casemiro reunion

10:42

Luke Baker

Cristiano Ronaldo has six months left on his contract with Al Nassr and is considering “several options” but the deciding factor could be where offers a reunion with Casemiro, according to Spanish outlet Marca.

Ronaldo and Casemiro played together for five seasons at Real Madrid, and also linked up at Manchester United, with the Portuguese now desperate to reunite with his old friend.

That could come at Al Nassr, where the 39-year-old has urged new signings to help compete with the likes of Al Hilal and Al Ittihad, who they trail in the Saudi Pro League. But Ronaldo also has the chance to move to the USA and a dual signing of him and Casemiro by an MLS club is a possibility, while there is also speculation he may want to return to Europe.

The deciding factor will be where Casemiro ends up after his severe drop-off in form at Manchester United means the Red Devils are happy for him to leave for Saudi Arabia or somewhere else this month.

Chelsea learn Marc Guehi asking price

10:33

Luke Baker

Marc Guehi is one of the more sought-after names this transfer window and the defender has now had his asking price set by Crystal Palace.

Guehi’s former club Chelsea are leading the charge to re-sign him amid a defensive injury crisis and have been told they will have to stump up £70m to make it happen.

Newcastle wanted the centre-back last summer and Palace turned down multiple bids, up to £60m, for him. They are set to stand firm on £70m, which Chelsea are currently unwilling to pay.

Meanwhile, Spanish outlet Sport are reporting that Barcelona sporting director Deco has already met with Duran’s representatives for informal talks to let him know he is on the Barca radar.

AC Milan to pounce on Olmo situation

Luke Baker

Italian giants AC Milan hope to pounce on the Dani Olmo situation at Barcelona.

The Spanish midfielder finds himself in deep water after Barcelona chiefs failed to seal his registration with La Liga. The Spanish giants are going through their options to keep him but may need to offload the player if they can’t register him with the Spanish footballing authorities.

According to SPORT, the Italian side are willing to offer him a six-month loan move to the San Siro after which time he would return to Barcelona.

It is a deal which could suit all parties though there are Premier League clubs also monitoring the situation and could yet throw spanners in the works.

Rashford has stated he is “ready for a new challenge” away from Old Trafford although it’s not guaranteed he will leave this month. His contract, which reportedly pays him £325,000 per week until 2028, could prove to be a stumbling block.

United and Dortmund did business last January when Jadon Sancho joined the German side on loan after things went south for him with the Red Devils.
