Clubs across the continent are in the market for January transfer deals as they look to strengthen their squads for the second half of the 2024/25 season with titles, European football and survival all on the line.
Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City are all rumoured to be circling new arrivals as they battle it out in the Premier League while the window could see some big exits confirmed with Trent Alexander-Arnold negotiating a possible free transfer to Real Madrid and Manchester United open to selling Marcus Rashford.
One of the more intriguing sagas is the fate of Dani Olmo who could be left in limbo is Barcelona fail in their attempts to re-register him. The Spanish giants are battling La Liga over finanical issues which could mean Olmo needs to find a new club and there are plenty of teams, Arsenal and Chelsea included, monitoring the situation.
And across the rest of the English top-flight, clubs are sticking to PSR regulations and tight budgets as they look to find cut-price deals to bolster their squads.

Arne Slot has claimed that the saga about Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future is helpful to him as it prevents his Liverpool players from being overloaded with praise that could make them complacent.
Real Madrid made an initial approach for the right-back this week, which Liverpool rebuffed before the Champions League holders could even make a bid.
But Alexander-Arnold, along with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, is out of contract in the summer and could leave Anfield on a free transfer. The 26-year-old has been able to discuss a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs since New Year’s Day and Real have made no secret of their interest in him.

Manchester United make Harry Maguire contract decision
Saturday 4 January 2025 23:00
Jamie Braidwood
Manchester United have triggered their option to extend Harry Maguire’s contract to keep their former captain at Old Trafford until 2026.
Head coach Ruben Amorim, who said Amad Diallo is also close to agreeing an extended deal, said he was happy to tie Maguire down for another year but called on the centre back to be more of a leader.
Maguire joined United for £80m in 2019, a world-record fee for a defender, but was stripped of the captaincy by former manager Erik ten Hag in 2023. But he worked his way back into the team last season, and with Amorim preferring to play a back three, he has started each of their last three games.

How Ruben Amorim can use the past to kick-start Man Utd’s ‘mission’ at Liverpool
Saturday 4 January 2025 22:00
Migyel Delaney
It is yet another of those moments where Ruben Amorim is trying to create a new future, only for history - and a more problematic present - to impose on events.
The Manchester United manager won’t use Marcus Rashford for a seventh successive game, after the England forward was ruled out for Sunday due to illness. There was considerable doubt over whether Amorim would have played him anyway but the prospect did weigh over Liverpool’s preparation, since Rashford is one player even Arne Slot’s most experienced defenders had a certain trepidation about. The 27-year-old has scored more times against Liverpool than any other club, with seven goals, and many of those have been big moments for different managers.

Mohamed Salah provides update on Liverpool contract talks: ‘It’s my last year in the club’
Saturday 4 January 2025 21:00
Jamie Braidwood
Mohamed Salah has said he refuses to be distracted by the uncertainty about his future, as he concentrates on having an “unbelievable season” to meet his target of winning the Premier League again with Liverpool.
The Egypt forward is in the last six months of his contract and said he is still “far away” from agreeing a new deal with the club.
But Salah leads the way in the Premier League for both goals and assists, with 17 and 13, as he has helped Liverpool take a six-point lead.
And he told Sky Sports: “The thing in my head is that, if this is the last six months, what do you want to see in the future? Do you want to look back and say I was concerned or stressed about the contract? Or do you just want to say I had an unbelievable season? That’s what is in my head.
“If I ever feel distraction, I just remind myself I want to look back and say I had an unbelievable season. That’s what I want to do.”

Ipswich are also interested in a move for Liverpool winger Ben Doak, who has impressed on loan at Middlesbrough.
Liverpool have put a £30m price tag on Doak after rejecting offers for the Scotland winger.
Liverpool are conscious of the price other young wingers have commanded with Crysencio Summerville moving from Leeds to West Ham for £25m and Wilson Odobert joining Tottenham from Burnley for £25m and believe Doak is worth far more than £15m.

Bournemouth players attract interest from Real Madrid
Saturday 4 January 2025 18:00
Jamie Braidwood
Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola said the club will not be selling players in January, with defender Dean Huijsen linked with Real Madrid.
The 19-year-old, who was signed from Juventus in the summer, has reportedly impressed Madrid with Bournemouth flying high in the Premeir League.
Milos Kerkez and forward Antoine Semenyo have also shone this season but Iraola said they would not be sold.
“No, it’s not the plan of the club,” he said. “We want to keep all of the players, the ones that are playing almost every game especially.
“You cannot guarantee because this is the market and you don’t know what is going to happen but it’s not in our plans.”

Marcus Rashford rejects Saudi Arabia move
Saturday 4 January 2025 12:00
Jamie Braidwood
Marcus Rashford has rejected three offers from the Saudi Pro League worth up to £35m a year, as he insists on only going to a competitive club and league if he is to leave Manchester United.
The Old Trafford hierarchy are willing to listen to offers for the 27-year-old in the January transfer window, with the forward himself publicly stating he is now open to a new challenge. That has come amid new manager Ruben Amorim leaving him out of the matchday squad for a series of games, as he begins plans to overhaul the team.
It is understood that Saudi Arabian clubs were the first to act on this, with three of them making offers that would involve wages in excess of Rashford’s £315,000-a-week contract at United. The player has already turned these down, and has made it known he is unwilling to move to Turkey, as he desires a move that would help to win back his England place in time for the 2026 World Cup.

After missing most of last season with injury, after undergoing knee surgery, the former Celtic player has has scored two goals and got five assists for Middlesbrough and has also excelled for Scotland, starring in their 1-0 win over Croatia in November.

New: Tottenham close to signing highly rated goalkeeper as Guglielmo Vicario cover

The 21-year-old, who has already earned admiration around a lot of Europe despite just breaking into the Slavia Prague team this season, is expected to cost £12.5 with add-ons.
The deal has been agreed ahead of Tottenham’s home fixture against Newcastle United, with the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool to come on Wednesday.
The absence of No 1 Vicario, who broke his ankle in the 4-0 win over Manchester City, is seen as one of the major reasons for Spurs’ recent drop-off, especially with how specifically Ange Postecoglou uses his goalkeepers.

Osimhen-Rashford swap deal?
Saturday 4 January 2025 10:00
Mike Jones
This is a rumour that kind of makes sense.
Manchester United are open to selling Marcus Rashford this month and would need the income from his sale to fund any incomings. Talk this next bit with a grain of salt but The Sun say that a swap deal could be in the offing with Napoli that sends Rashford to Serie A in return for striker Victor Osimhen.
Osimhen is currently exiled from the Italian side having refused a move to Saudi Arabia in the summer which would have brought in a lot of money.
The striker is currently on loan at Galatasaray but could secure a permanent move this month if he heads to a competitive club and league.
This deal is unlikely but not out of the realms of possibility given the two club’s financial situations.
Man Utd book medical for Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon
Saturday 4 January 2025 09:00
Mike Jones
Diego Leon looks poised to join Manchester United, after the Paraguayan’s agent Renato Bittar, who represents the group La Squadra, confirmed the Cerro Porteno defender will undergo medical tests.
Leon can operate as a wing-back, which should suit Ruben Amorim’s system.
The 17-year-old has played 19 times for the Paraguayan giants, scoring twice.
Liverpool refuse to consider Trent sale in January
Saturday 4 January 2025 08:00
Mike Jones
Reports over the past day or two suggest that Real Madrid are likely to return with a more firm offer for Trent Alexander-Arnold, after initial conversations were shut down by Liverpool.
However, the i paper are saying the result will be the same: the Reds will reject any possibility of letting their right-back leave in midseason, instead focusing on trying to land trophies and convince him to sign a new contract instead.
Alexander-Arnold, who is the club’s vice captain, can now talk freely to Real and arrange a move without a fee at the end of the season.
January transfers need a spark - not unsellable players, risk-off clubs and one big Man City question mark
Saturday 4 January 2025 06:00
Mike Jones
As a sign of how constrained this January window might be, one mid-level Champions League club briefly considered whether a move for Marcus Rashford might be possible. There was a feeling his comments about leaving Manchester United could lead to a knock-down price… only for their interest to almost immediately be knocked down. The plan to try and enquire about a £30m deal didn’t even get off the ground.
The gap to what United would actually want, which is understood to be beyond £60m, shows how it might take an awful lot to get this market going. One circular problem sums up everything. Most Premier League clubs want to do significant business but PSR has left highly-paid squads with little headroom, and those in Europe just don’t have the money to spend. Many of the latter are still struggling after Covid, especially when the English competition so inflates the wage race. As a consequence, almost everyone needs to sell first, but there are few buyers to make that happen. That is the set-up for stagnation, and a market that simply won’t move.

Marcus Rashford responds to ‘ridiculous’ speculation over Manchester United future
Saturday 4 January 2025 05:00
Mike Jones
Marcus Rashford has described the latest speculation concerning his future at Manchester United as “ridiculous”.
A report claimed the United striker had met with a leading sports agency to try to hasten a move away from Old Trafford.
This comes after the 27-year-old said in an interview last month he was ready “for a new challenge” after falling out of favour under new boss Ruben Amorim.
But Rashford, who is currently represented by his brother Dwaine Maynard, wrote on Instagram: “Been a lot of false stories written over the past few weeks, but guys this is getting ridiculous – never met with any agency and don’t have any plans to…”

Real Madrid consider second bid for Trent Alexander-Arnold to bring Liverpool star to Bernabeu in January
Saturday 4 January 2025 04:00
Mike Jones
Real Madrid are mulling over a second January bid for Trent Alexander-Arnold to bring the right-back to the Bernabeu before next summer, when he will be available on a free transfer.
The Times report the Spanish side will test Liverpool’s resolve with Arne Slot’s side top of the Premier League and Champions League.
While the report states no figures were discussed initially, Real Madrid could be ready to pay just over £20m to make the move six months earlier than a potential summer move.

Manchester United’s major transfer obstacle as Ruben Amorim seeks reinforcements
Saturday 4 January 2025 03:00
Mike Jones
Manchester United do not have the funds to buy players to strengthen their struggling team in the January transfer window.
Monday’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle was their fourth consecutive loss and left United marooned in 14th place in the Premier League, with new head coach Ruben Amorim warning a first relegation in 51 years could be a possibility.
But after spending more than £200m on summer signings and with very little leeway within Profitability & Sustainability Rules (PSR), United are unable to spend unless they sell.

Barnes back to Burnley after Norwich exit
Saturday 4 January 2025 02:00
Mike Jones
Championship news to kick things off this morning, where Ashley Barnes has gone “back home”, in his own words.

He played nearly 300 times for the Clarets, scoring 67, and he has already won promotion three times with them.
City must go big or go home in January - Carragher
Saturday 4 January 2025 01:00
Mike Jones
Jamie Carragher says Man City will either go big or not bother in January, despite their terrible drop-off in results this season.
“Man City will try and get the real deal [in January], of course they will, but what you don’t want to do is to end up sort of buying someone for £30m-£40m and in six months he’s not going to play and he’s going to be sitting there on big wages,” he said on Sky Sports.
“If they feel they need to do that to help them get over the line to make the Champions League then they have to do it - but if it’s someone who they don’t really think will move the dial in the next six months or in the future then it’s probably best to leave it.”
City are sixth in the table at the halfway point after beating Leicester to end their winless run, but sit 14 points off leaders Liverpool who also have a game in hand.

Saturday 4 January 2025 00:00
Mike Jones

The Dutchman has slipped down the pecking order at Borussia Dortmund and may be available for the right fee. Villa have opened talks over a move, according to Sky Sports.

From tactics and captaincy to Bellingham’s best role, the many problems facing Thomas Tuchel as England manager
Friday 3 January 2025 23:00
Mike Jones
If 2024 took England to the brink of the trophy that has eluded them since 1966, 2025 brings the arrival of a manager with the track record of winning silverware that Gareth Southgate lacked. Southgate’s achievement in twice coming agonisingly close, denied by penalties in the Euro 2020 final and by an 86th-minute decider four years later, earned him a knighthood.
Thomas Tuchel is ineligible for such an honour. But he has medals from the Champions League, the Bundesliga and Ligue Un. A manager whose contract only lasts until 2026 will be charged with winning the World Cup. He has at least already won the Club World Cup.
Tuchel officially starts work on New Year’s Day, though he attended December’s draw in Zurich to determine England’s opponents in World Cup qualifying: Serbia, Albania, Latvia and Andorra do not promise to form a pool of death.
“It’s a difficult group,” said Tuchel but qualifying has rarely presented a problem for England since Steve McClaren failed to reach Euro 2008 and the German is a manager with a proven expertise in knockout football. Besides his Champions League win with Chelsea, Tuchel steered Paris Saint-Germain to the final and Bayern Munich to within a few minutes of it.

Liverpool’s vision revealed by Arne Slot and Ruben Amorim’s key difference
Friday 3 January 2025 22:30
Mike Jones
Jurgen Klopp dropped his bombshell, he later revealed, in November 2023. In January 2024, he went public. Liverpool’s search for a manager could begin; not publicly, given their preference for doing their business as quietly as possible, but at least with one layer of secrecy removed.
They were soon informed that Xabi Alonso was minded to stay at Bayer Leverkusen for another year. To many in the wider world, Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim assumed a status as the frontrunner after that. Not so, Liverpool would say; he was merely one of several they looked into.
There was no preferred choice, they insist, until they alighted on Feyenoord’s Arne Slot. But he seemed to emerge from the shadows. The high-profile nature of the Portuguese’s candidacy contrasted with the low-key approach adopted by Slot. He got the job by stealth, almost without warning.

Alexander Isak alternative identified by Arsenal
Friday 3 January 2025 22:00
Mike Jones
Brighton striker Evan Ferguson is the new man on Arsenal’s radar, according to reports.
Alexander Isak has long been touted as the Gunners’ top target to add to their frontline but Newcastle are said to be adamant that the Swede won’t leave.
TalkSPORT claim that Brighton are mulling over what to do with Ferguson, who is yet to make his mark on their attack this season.
Fulham and West Ham are also claimed to be keen with a loan deal not ruled out.
Arsenal and Man Utd wait on Dani Olmo saga
Friday 3 January 2025 21:30
Mike Jones
Patience is a virtue in the race to sign Dani Olmo, should he become available.
Marca report on the Barcelona midfielder needing LaLiga approval to appear in any of the Spanish giants’ competitions in the second half of the season, having been deregistered due to financial restrictions.
Manchester United and Man City are named in this latest report and Arsenal have recently been linked, and now a loan move is being talked about as potentially on the cards.
But first Olmo and Barcelona are said to be intent on exhausting all available options to keep him at the Camp Nou.
