KUALA LUMPUR – The Transport Ministry is looking to increase the maximum duration of Competent Driving License (CDL) renewals from five years to ten, said its minister Anthony Loke.
In Dewan Rakyat today, Loke said such a move could increase revenue for the Road Transport Department and government.
This was in response to a question by Kalam Salan (Sabak Bernam-PN) who asked about the need to resit driving examinations if a motorist’s licence has expired for a long time.
Loke suggested a one-time payment for driving licences to avoid burdening the public with having to apply for new ones.
“I understand the situation and I do receive some suggestions regarding this matter from social media to make it a one-time payment, and to have lifelong usage of driving licences,” Loke said.
He said the ministry is looking into making CDLs valid for up to 10 years instead of the maximum five years in practice now. The minimum duration for the validity of licences currently stands at one year.
Loke added that this proposal could be implemented soon.
Currently, the renewal cost for CDLs stands at RM30 for a year, RM 90 for three years, and RM150 for five years.
Those who drive with expired licences face a fine of RM150 if they get caught in the first 15 days and up to RM300 if the penalty is paid between 31 and 60 days of the offence. – The Vibes, February 22, 2023.
