Trump orders US federal agencies to replace ‘AI’ with ‘Super Intelligence’

The US government is officially moving away from the term Artificial Intelligence (AI). President Donald Trump has signed an executive order directing federal departments and agencies to use “Super Intelligence” (SI) in place of “AI” going forward.

Signed on 29 September 2026, the order applies to official communications and other non-statutory materials issued by the US executive branch. According to the White House, the new name better reflects what today’s technology is capable of, rather than framing it as something that merely imitates or automates aspects of human intelligence.

As part of the order, the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology has been tasked with proposing a federal definition of “Super Intelligence”. The science adviser will also assess whether the new definition should modify, expand upon or replace the existing legal definition of artificial intelligence, with the proposal due within 60 days.

That said, the change isn’t quite as sweeping as it sounds. Existing regulations, contracts, grants and other historical documents won’t need to be rewritten, while laws that already define artificial intelligence stay as they are for now. There’s also no indication that the order applies to private companies, so tech firms in the US can continue using “AI” for their products and services.

So what does this mean for us in Malaysia? For now, not much. The order only applies to the US executive branch and has no binding effect outside the country, which means brands selling in Malaysia are under no obligation to drop “AI” from their product launches and marketing. While Trump has said he hopes the rest of the world adopts the new term, whether global brands follow suit is another story altogether.
