ANKARA - United States (US) President Donald Trump announced early Tuesday that a ceasefire between Iran and Israel is now in effect, urging both sides to adhere to the agreement, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported.

"THE CEASEFIRE IS NOW IN EFFECT. PLEASE DO NOT VIOLATE IT!" Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.

On Monday, Trump said that Israel and Iran had agreed to a "complete and total" ceasefire amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The ceasefire came after Iran launched a barrage of missiles at the US military’s Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar on Monday, marking a significant escalation following US airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities the previous day.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said American forces, in coordination with Qatar, "successfully” defended against the attack, confirming there were no casualties among US or Qatari personnel.

Regional tensions surged on Sunday after US strikes targeted Iran’s Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear sites.

The operation marked the latest phase of a US-backed Israeli military campaign against Iran that began on June 13. - BERNAMA
