US President Donald Trump on Monday said Iran's enriched uranium will either be sent to the United States for destruction or destroyed elsewhere, as negotiations continue on a framework agreement to end the war with Iran.

The enriched uranium would either be "immediately" handed over to the US and destroyed there, or destroyed in place or at another acceptable location in coordination with Tehran, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

Trump said the process should be witnessed by the "Atomic Energy Commission, or its equivalent." It was initially unclear whether he meant a US agency or possibly the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), based in Vienna.

It also remained unclear whether Trump was describing the current state of negotiations, a US demand in the talks, or a point that had already been agreed as part of a possible deal.

The future of Tehran's stockpile of around 400 kilograms of highly enriched uranium is a key sticking point in the negotiations. On Saturday, Trump said a framework agreement had been "largely" negotiated.

Israel and the US jointly went to war against Iran on February 28.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that he and Trump had agreed in a phone call the previous evening that any final agreement with Iran must eliminate the nuclear threat.

That meant Iran's uranium enrichment facilities would have to be dismantled and its stockpile of highly enriched uranium removed from the country, Netanyahu said.
