KUALA LUMPUR – The Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, has called for Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun to remain as Menteri Besar for now, until the question over his majority support in the state assembly is fully “clarified”.

Aminuddin said this was conveyed to him during his audience with Tuanku Muhriz earlier today after Negeri Sembilan Umno’s shock announcement that its 14 assemblymen had pulled their support for him and his state administration.

The situation has raised questions over Aminuddin’s status and the Pakatan Harapan-led state government’s position, as the coalition only has 17 seats, two short of a simple majority in the 36-seat legislative assembly. Umno-Barisan Nasional (BN) has 14 seats and the opposition, Perikatan Nasional (PN), has five.

But Aminuddin said the state administration does not automatically collapse with the loss of support, as any change in Menteri Besar must be determined either through a vote of no confidence in the state assembly or by the appointment of a new Menteri Besar with the consent of the Ruler.

At a press conference in Seremban today, he said the state government would continue operating as normal, stressing that he had been advised by the Ruler to carry on discharging his duties as Menteri Besar.

“In accordance with the Negeri Sembilan State Constitution, the state government will continue to function as usual, ensuring that administrative affairs run smoothly and the interests of the people are safeguarded,” he said.

He said his administration could continue to function as a minority government, and ruled out the need for a dissolution of the assembly to hold elections.

All subsequent actions would be taken in accordance with constitutional provisions, while awaiting clarity on the government’s majority position in the assembly, he added.

Following Umno’s announcement earlier today, Negeri Sembilan PN said it was ready to cooperate with Umno-BN in the state.

If that alignment materialises, BN and PN would collectively command 19 seats, enough to form a simple majority in the 36-seat state legislative assembly and potentially unseat the PH-led government.

Aminuddin, however, said Negeri Sembilan Pakatan Harapan would wait to see Umno-BN's next move.

At a press conference this morning, Negeri Sembilan Umno chairman Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias said all 14 assemblymen from the party had withdrawn their support for Aminuddin, and that the state legislative assembly speaker would be informed immediately of the development.

The crisis began with the state's four territorial chieftains (Undang Berempat) who announced the removal of Tuanku Muhriz as Yang di-Pertuan Negeri. However, Aminuddin said the state government rejected the removal as one of the chieftains had ceased to hold his position since last May, making their decision invalid.

The stalemate led to the indefinite postponement of the state legislative assembly sitting after the opening ceremony officiated by Tuanku Muhriz last Thursday.

Aminuddin revealed that discussions had taken place involving state executive councillors, including Umno-BN representatives, prior to the postponement of the state assembly sitting.

According to him, an agreement had been reached for the opening ceremony to proceed while the sitting itself was postponed, following a request from Umno-BN representatives.

“I was surprised by the development (Umno’s withdrawal of support) because previously we had agreed on the (assembly) postponement,” he said.

He added that if Umno-BN assemblymen intended to withdraw their support, they should have allowed the assembly sitting to proceed and table motion of confidence on him. - April 27, 2026
