England manager Thomas Tuchel faces tough squad decisions after a lacklustre 1-0 loss to Japan in their final home match before the 2026 World Cup.

THOMAS Tuchel insists he has gained “more clarity” after England’s final pre-World Cup camp, but a 1-0 home defeat to Japan has raised more questions than answers. The Euro 2024 runners-up dominated possession but lacked cutting edge at Wembley, with Kaoru Mitoma’s fine first-half strike sealing a historic win for Japan.

Tuchel was forced to tear up his plans for the friendly due to a spate of withdrawals from key players. Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, Manchester City’s John Stones, and captain Harry Kane all missed the match, while Jude Bellingham remained on the bench.

The England boss pointed to the intense demands of the club season as a mitigating factor for the disjointed performance. “We knew that we had a tough exam,” Tuchel said. “We had seven, eight injuries who had to leave camp. It’s not an excuse, it’s just an explanation.”

Major questions now loom over several key positions just eight weeks before Tuchel names his final squad. Kane’s absence underscored his irreplaceable status, with Tuchel admitting “no team in the world has the same threat” as Bayern Munich with their striker.

In midfield, Rice was sorely missed, though Elliot Anderson may have done enough to stake a claim as his partner. The central defence pairing of Marc Guehi and Ezri Konsa had shaky moments, while the left-back position remains wide open.

In attack, Phil Foden and Cole Palmer failed to solidify their starting claims, and Morgan Rogers showed only flashes of his talent. A bullish Tuchel said the camp provided valuable lessons but admitted the coming weeks will be nerve-wracking for player fitness.

“It will be scary to watch TV on the weekend because from now on every muscle injury can mean that a player misses out,” he stated. The German manager now has two months to finalise his plans before England begin their campaign against Croatia in Dallas on June 17.
