PUTRAJAYA – The late Tun Dr Hasmah Mohamad Ali has been laid to rest at the Pusara Negara in Presint 20, here.
The remains of the wife of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad were brought to Pusara Negara after two funeral prayers at Masjid As-Syarif, Taman Sungai Besi Indah, following the Asar prayers.
Dr Hasmah was accorded the funeral honours befitting a national dignitary, in recognition of her contributions to the country. She was laid beside the grave of the late Tun Endon Mahmood, wife to another former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi who succumbed to cancer in 2005.
Dr Hasmah died at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur at 9.20am today at the age of 100. Her death was confirmed by her son, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir.
Born on July 12, 1926, Dr Hasmah was among Malaysia’s pioneering Malay women doctors and made significant contributions to public health, particularly maternal and child healthcare.
She married Mahathir in 1956 and the couple were married for 70 years, raising seven children.
Dr Hasmah celebrated her 100th birthday on July 12 this year, while Mahathir turned 101 on July 10.
