Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad voiced concerns, stating that he has been subjected to police questioning on more than ten occasions recently, attributing this scrutiny to his "Tun" title. Expressing frustration, he highlighted the lack of investigations into individuals linked to high-profile cases such as the Pandora Papers and Panama Papers leaks.
During a press conference at the Perdana Leadership Foundation, Dr Mahathir remarked that since acquiring the "Tun" title, he has faced numerous investigations while others, not holding the same title, seemingly avoid such scrutiny. This follows an ongoing exchange with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who previously mentioned the difficulty of investigating someone with a high-profile title like "Tun."
The former prime minister revealed that he has been targeted with 18 police reports, stemming from controversial comments about ethnic minorities. He expressed concern over accusations triggering investigations even in the absence of substantial evidence, contrasting it with the alleged impunity of political figures.
Dr Mahathir urged the police to remain impartial and avoid involvement in political matters, emphasizing the need to protect citizens rather than oppress them. He stressed the pressure faced in Malaysia, where investigations are initiated based on accusations, contrasting it with politicians who can allegedly order actions without clear evidence.
In a recent interview with Indian-language TV channel Thanthi TV, Dr Mahathir claimed that the Indian and Chinese communities in Malaysia do not identify as Malaysians due to loyalty to their countries of origin. This assertion aligns with his vocal advocacy for assimilating minorities into the Malay identity.
Dr Mahathir's involvement with Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra), a Malay supremacist group, has fueled his recent calls for assimilation. He accused selective persecution after the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission directed his elder son Mirzan to declare his wealth. The situation underscores broader concerns about political influence, investigations, and the treatment of high-profile figures in Malaysia.
