Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim believes Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad should be left alone because of their complicated relationship.
Anwar was saying this in an interview with Thai PBS World when he was questioned about Mahathir's performance in the 15th General Election (GE15), where he failed to defend his Langkawi seat. Anwar became the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia last year, much to the dismay of Mahathir.
Mahathir has admitted that he was saddened by the fact that voters had rejected him.
"I lost 14,000 votes and was voted out. I am unsure of what I did incorrectly. What have I done?" The former Langkawi member of parliament (MP) said on February 4.
When asked what advice he would give Mahathir, Anwar responded, "We have got to read the signs, when it is done, it's done," emphasizing the necessity for Mahathir to accept the reality of the situation.
Anwar claims that although Mahathir did his part, he also made a number of mistakes and that the nation must "move on" for the time being.
Anwar stated that "at the correct moment, (the country) would even move on" beyond him, adding that "we have to accept this reality, the sooner myself, him, or anybody accepts the truth that we have a function, (the better)".
Prior to the GE14, Mahathir got back into politics and won the Langkawi seat, becoming the seventh prime minister.
Nonetheless, he broke his vow to give Anwar the premiership following his pardon.
The Pakatan Harapan government fell in 2020 as a result of Mahathir's unwillingness to give Anwar the position of prime minister, which sparked a political crisis that resulted in Mahathir's departure as prime minister.
After that, Malaysia was engulfed in a political crisis that persisted up to GE15 last year. During this time, the nation had two new prime ministers, neither of whom was able to hold onto their positions.
