Imagine Tun Mahathir as a DJ.
Since KJ is a DJ on Hot FM, why not Tun M for Klasik FM?
It would be wonderful for the old folks who tune in to the station just to hear old Malay songs by crooners like P. Ramlee, S.M Salim or Saloma and be hosted by a DJ like Tun who knew those singers well when they were alive.
We are certain that Tun Mahathir too listens to them just for old time's sake.
By bringing Tun Mahathir on air at Klasik FM, the number of ears might be enhanced with a former PM hosting a programme like "Terkenang Semasa Dulu" by attracting Baby Boomers the way KJ is expected to draw in GenY to Hot FM.
Incidentally "Terkenang Semasa Dulu" is also the title of an old song made famous by R.Azmi in 1950s. It is quite nostalgic when one hears the song urging you to think back to the old days.
In addition, the station even play kerongcong way past bedtime of the old Baby Boomers for the very same reason.
I know of a few oldies in my neighbourhood who would hang on by their radio sets way past 11 pm just to listen to keroncong like "Oleole di Kota Raja". Or even Keroncong Kuala Lumpur by P. Ramlee late into the night.
If Tun planned to develop Mufakat Nasional that is being pushed by Annuar Musa, this channel would be an ideal network to widen the appeal because most Malays above 60s tune in to this station to get their fix of old Malay folk songs and hits.
At the same time in the Malay heartlands Radio Klasik is still a favourite. Drop by any coffee shop by the roadside off the beaten tracks in Pahang or Kedah you'll hear Klasik FM blasting away while you try to sip you "kopi-O".
Imagine being able to hear Tun Mahathir reciting his poem or read aloud hits motivating sajak over the air. Or give an inspiring speech for the young in between the old songs. Or he could even sing his favourite songs, like "I Did it My Way" to entertain his audience between commercials.
However Klasik FM has denied that it is planning to recruit Tun Mahathir as its new DJ.
We do hope the station would reconsider because the potential is tremendous even if it is not for political purposes. Think back to the days when Tunku Abdul Rahman had a column in The Star "As I see It" which attracted readers nationwide where a former statesman offered his views about development in the country. Tun Mahathir could play a similar role without getting too political.
At the same time we may be able to hear an old statesman sharing his ideas about life, nation building and future of the country as he sees it. But more importantly it would give an old politician a chance to ramble on air until his ripe old age.
It is a form of recognition that any old man hopes to get when nothing else matters.
