At least eight people have been injured in a shooting outside of a high school in Turkey.
The gunman opened fire near the İnci Üzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in the western Manisa province shortly before 8am local time on Tuesday morning, the governorship said.
Casualties were rushed to hospital and at least two people were in a critical condition, according to local reports. Security and medical teams were on the scene.
A suspect was arrested and taken into custody by local security forces, the governorship said. Earlier reports said a manhunt had been launched after the suspected gunman fled the scene on foot.
Video shared by Turkey’s TV100 purported to show the attacker wielding a shotgun just after 8am local time. The man is seen at first walking quickly through a quiet street towards the school with the weapon in one hand, before later running back the other way, the outlet said.
Another angle showed the suspect, wearing a green shirt, a dark jacket and dark trousers, turning a corner while fiddling with the firearm.
The motive for the attack was not immediately clear.
A large crowd of parents was seen gathered at the school later this morning. Minor clashes broke out with security personnel in the fracas, according to Turkiye Today.
A full investigation into the shooting has been launched and police are expected to share developments later on.
Two deadly school shootings in April caused outrage in Turkey and prompted officials to implement new security measures for the 2026-2027 academic year, including tighter gun controls. Before then, the country had not had a history of such attacks.
In one incident, a 14-year-old opened fire at a school in the Kahramanmaraş province, killing nine students and a teacher. The attacker died at the scene.
The other attack saw a former student open fire at his former school in Şanlıurfa, wounding 16 people.
