A Turkish doctoral student at Tufts University in the US has been detained by federal agents without explanation, her lawyer said on Wednesday.

Rumeysa Ozturk, 30, was taken into custody in Somerville on Tuesday night as she left home to meet friends for iftar.

Surveillance footage shows masked individuals confiscating her phone before handcuffing her.

Tufts University confirmed her visa had been terminated but denied involvement. A federal judge has ordered the government to explain her detention by Friday while restricting any transfer outside Massachusetts.
