The Sonepat police on Thursday arrested two accused allegedly involved in demanding an amount of Rs one crore from a USA returnee by using the name of a notorious gangster who operates from abroad. ACP Devender Singh said the main accused had been identified as Nakul of Sheikhpura Titri village, presently living in Sector 4 of Rohtak, while his associate had been identified as Rahul of Farmana village, currently a resident of Vishal Nagar in Rohtak.

The ACP said that Rohit, a resident of Mahra village in Baroda area, on May 2 had filed a complaint with the Baroda police. The complainant said that he had been living in America with his brother for many years and came to India on April 8 after three years.

Rohit said he was using WhatsApp on an American mobile number at the time. On May 2, he received a message from an individual posing as a member of the Rohit Godara gang and demanded Rs one crore from him. He alleged the caller threatened him of dire consequences for refusing money.

Based on the complaint, a case was registered under the relevant sections of the BNS and an investigation was launched into the matter. The police team, led by Bhainswan Khurd incharge ASI Kuldeep, nabbed two accused from Mahra village and produced them before a court.

According to the police, Nakul is a relative of victim Rohit. Both accused were friends and knew that Rohit had money as he was returning from the USA. Nakul demanded the extortion amount from Rohit by making Whatsapp calls via a foreign number, said the ACP, adding he had logged onto Whatsapp using the number of a friend who lived in Thailand to mislead the police.

“The accused have no connection with the notorious Rohit Godara gang and they were only using the gangsters’ name to exert pressure on the victim. The accused were produced in court and sent to judicial custody,” added the ACP.
