SANDAKAN: Two boys drowned while swimming in an abandoned pond behind the Sungai Manila People’s Housing Project (PPR) along Jalan Sungai Manila on Monday.

One of them was identified as Mohd Ikmal, 9, while the other, aged 11, has yet to be identified.

The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre, in a statement, said the department received an emergency call via the MERS 999 hotline at 6.01pm and dispatched a team of five personnel from the Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) to the scene.

“Upon arriving at the scene at 6.36pm, the fire and rescue team found that both victims had already been located and pulled out of the pond by members of the public.

“Further examination by the Ministry of Health confirmed that both victims had died at the scene,” the statement said.
