
Tuaran: Two people were killed after they were trapped in their vehicles in separate collisions here, on the first day of Hari Raya.
In the first at Kg Minangkob, Jalan Tamparuli-Ranau, a 43-year-old man was killed after being struck by a trailer. He was trapped in his Toyota Hilux four-wheel-drive (4WD).
Pius Pansang (left) from Kg Kiau Taburi, Kota Belud, sustained severe head and body injuries in the 7.25am incident.
District Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) Chief, Senior Fire Supt Mohd Nor Amit, said nine personnel were dispatched to the scene with a fire engine and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) utility vehicle after receiving an emergency call at 7.27am.
“Upon arrival, firefighters found the victim trapped in the front section of the 4WD. Special equipment had to be used to extricate him. The rescue team took approximately five hours with the assistance of a towing vehicle,” said Mohd Nor.
Pius was confirmed dead by Ministry of Health staff and handed over to the police for further action.
“The cause of the accident is still under investigation,” he said.
In the second tragedy, a 20-year-old was killed after being trapped in a three-vehicle accident at Kg Nouga on Jalan Tenghilan-Tuaran at 3.30pm.
It involved a Perodua Bezza, a Mitsubishi Triton and a Perodua Axia, with the Bezza driver pronounced dead at the scene due to severe head and body injuries.
Ten others in the Mitsubishi Triton four-wheel-drive and a Perodua Axia did not sustain serious injuries. Mohd Nor said the department received an emergency call at 3.33pm.
“Nine personnel were disptached to the scene in a fire engine and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) utility vehicle. Upon arrival, the fire team found a male victim trapped in the driver's seat of the Perodua Bezza and used special equipment to extract him. The victim was later confirmed dead and handed over to the police for further action,” said Mohd Nor.
The causes behind both incidents are still under investigation.
