
Two alleged gangsters and a policeman were injured during an exchange of fire here last night. According to the police, the gangsters had opened fire on them during the recovery of arms. Giving details, SSP Shubham Aggarwal said the CIA staff of Sirhind had earlier arrested Harmandeep Singh, alias, Rupan; and Gurjant Singh, alias Janti. A .315 bore pistol and 10 live cartridges were seized from them. He said during the investigation, they revealed that the accused were part of a criminal network involved in supplying illegal weapons, drug smuggling, extortion and issuing threats to people.
The probe also indicated their links with gangsters operating from abroad. He said on their discloser, the police arrested Sahajpreet Singh, Mehakpreet Singh and Manjot Singh and obtained their police remand from the court.
During interrogation, they disclosed about hidden weapons, following which teams of the CIA staff and the Badali Ala Singh police station took Sahajpreet Singh and Mehakpreet Singh to a secluded location close to Vaidwan village for recovery.
Aggarwal said while the recovery operation was underway, Mehakpreet suddenly pulled out a concealed pistol and opened fire on the police party. At the same time, Sahajpreet Singh allegedly attacked police personnel and attempted to resist the operation. Acting swiftly, the police retaliated.
During the exchange of fire, Mehakpreet sustained a bullet injury in his leg while Sahajpreet Singh suffered injuries during a scuffle.
Constable Gurpreet Singh was also injured in the incident. The SSP said the injured were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
