Two held over alleged RM1,500 extortion bid

PENAMPANG: Two local men aged 19 and 28 were arrested for allegedly impersonating enforcement officers and attempting to extort RM1,500 from a foreign man at Kampung Koidupan Sugud here.

Penampang District Police Chief Supt Sammy Newton said the suspects, who were wearing clothes resembling enforcement agency attire, allegedly approached the victim at about 12.10am and asked him to produce identification documents before accusing him of failing to produce a passport.

He said the duo allegedly demanded RM1,500 from the victim to settle the purported offence, but attempted to flee when asked to produce their authority cards and were subsequently detained by villagers before being handed over to police.

Police also seized several items of clothing resembling those of an enforcement agency believed to have been worn by the suspects, with the case being investigated under Sections 384 and 170 of the Penal Code for alleged extortion and impersonating a public servant.

Police advised the public to be vigilant when approached by individuals claiming to be enforcement officers and to immediately report any suspicious incidents or behaviour.
