
PAPAR: Two people attending to a flat tyre along Km 9 of the Pan Borneo Highway near Nagapas, here, were killed instantly when a Proton that lost control crashed into them on Saturday.
Both victims were were lorry drivers and one of them aged 26 decided to help the other aged 62 when the tragedy happened at 2pm.
They were rammed by the Proton while carrying out the tire replacement work and were pronounced dead at the scene after succumbing to serious injuries.
District Police Chief Superintendent Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka said initial investigations revealed that both drivers – who were on the right side of the lorry – were hit by a Proton Saga driven by a 23-year-old local man heading towards Kimanis from Kota Kinabalu. The Proton turned turtle on the left side of the road.
Kamaruddin said the Proton driver and passenger were brought to district hospital after suffering minor injuries to their legs and arms while the victims were brought to Papar Hospital Forensic Unit for post-mortem.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
