Two men detained over ammunition haul in Nabawan

KENINGAU: Police arrested two men and seized ammunition and a machete in two separate operations in Nabawan on Wednesday afternoon.

Keningau Police Chief Supt Yampil Anak Garai said a 22-year-old man was detained in front of a convenience store in Kampung Malinja, Nabawan, at about 3.15pm following information received by the D9 unit of the Sabah Contingent Police Headquarters Criminal Investigation Department.

He said police found two boxes containing 40 rounds of 5.56mm Ball M193 ammunition in the suspect’s sling bag and also seized a long machete.

Following the arrest, police inspected a house in Nabawan indicated by the suspect and found a green box containing 140 rounds of 5.56mm Ball M193 ammunition and two scattergun cartridges, before detaining a 45-year-old Territorial Army corporal believed to be the owner of the ammunition.

Both suspects, who have no previous criminal records, were remanded for four days to assist investigations under Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960, while police seized a total of 180 rounds of 5.56mm Ball M193 ammunition, two scattergun cartridges and a long machete.
