TAMPARULI: Two women were rescued after their car got trapped while trying to cross a flooded section of the Low Level Crossing (LLC) Bridge, here, Thursday evening. It was learnt that both were from Peninsular Malaysia who had travelled to Sabah to climb Mount Kinabalu.
The incident is believed to have occurred as they were returning to Kota Kinabalu in a Perodua Bezza after completing their climb. A witness said the driver was believed to be unfamiliar with the route and relied on the Waze application to determine their direction.
The situation became more alarming as darkness fell, with bad weather and rising water levels causing the vehicle to float. Members of the public who noticed the incident acted quickly to help, and both women were rescued.
However, several belongings and personal documents belonging to the victims are believed to have been submerged.
The bridge had only been reopened to motorists on Thursday after being closed for about nine months for repair works following structural damage caused by subsidence along the road surface.
Around 8am Friday, the victims’ car was seen at the end of the bridge after the river water receded to a lower level.
Police personnel were also seen helping to retrieve the victims’ belongings from the vehicle. As of now, no official statement has been issued by any agency. Motorists are advised to avoid the area until further notice.
