Tyler Perry is taking a step back from Hollywood.
The renowned filmmaker, 57, announced in a new interview that he plans to move to Puerto Rico with his 11-year-old son in 2027.
“Yes, I am officially — you’re the first to hear this — I am officially moving to Puerto Rico,” Perry said Monday on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle. “No, this is real.”
After decades of working as a world-famous producer, director and actor, Perry said: “Yep, moving to Puerto Rico at the top of the year, and I’m pulling back a whole lot.”
When asked what inspired the decision, the actor said “getting older,” adding, “It’s time to slow down a bit, enjoy more time with my son and just take it all in.”
Representatives for Perry did not immediately return The Independent’s request for comment.
The news means that Perry, a Louisiana native, will be moving out of his million-dollar mansion outside of Atlanta, Georgia, which is near his film studio in the area.
Perry shares his only son, Aman, with his ex-girlfriend Gelila Bekele. The former couple broke up in 2020.
The Hollywood mogul said on Today that spending more time with Aman has helped him to work through problems related to his own childhood.
“Having this opportunity and this moment to be a father and give him all the love that I never had has been really, really healing,” Perry said.

Perry recently added to his resume of more than 24 feature films and 17 television series with his latest movie, Why Did I Get Married Again?
The comedy, which was released September 9 on Netflix, is the third installment in the Why Did I Get Married? trilogy, which started in 2007.
The Madea star said on the morning show that the franchise helped him realize that marriage is not for him.
“When I wrote the first one I thought, ‘You know, marriage might be a good idea at some point,’” he said. “But at this age, I’m like, ‘No, that’s not a good idea for me.’ So, no. Won’t be any marriage for me.”
Perry’s plans come as the filmmaker has dealt with legal issues in recent years.
He is currently facing two multi-million lawsuits after two actors accused him of sexual misconduct in separate instances last year. He has strongly denied all allegations against him and declared both lawsuits a “scam.”
