UAAP stresses protocol, backs Ateneo’s private mourning after tragic team building incident

MANILA, Philippines — The silence of Ateneo de Manila University men’s basketball head coach Tab Baldwin has stirred backlash online, but UAAP executive director Rebo Saguisag clarified that proper protocol must be observed as the institution grieves a tragic loss.

Nineteen-year-old Rene Baterbonia and 21-year-old Divine Adili passed away on June 8 during a reported team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.

Saguisag, along with Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Patrick Gregorio and secretary general Usec. Malcolm S. Garma, addressed the media Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Media Center, emphasizing the need for sensitivity and due process.

“On the part of the UAAP, this is a tragic incident, and Ateneo has requested to mourn privately,” Saguisag said. “We are currently in communication with them, initially through their representatives, to hear their side. There is a protocol we need to follow.”

He added that the league is taking careful steps given the gravity of the situation.

“Because of the sensitivity of the issue, we will first seek clarification. If necessary, we will take the next steps. Hopefully, we can arrive at a resolution,” he said.

Gregorio echoed the league’s stance, assuring the public that action is being taken alongside mourning.

“Are we going to talk to Ateneo? Yes. Is Ateneo willing to talk to us? Yes. Will we reach out to the families? Yes. Will we help the families? Yes,” Gregorio said.

“We want to send a clear message that we are doing something and are not indifferent to this case,” he added, noting that he would personally visit Baterbonia’s wake after the press conference.
