The University of Malaya community is mourning the loss of Cindy Wong Xin Yee, a 23-year-old student from the Japanese Programme, who passed away peacefully at 3:11 AM on 18 July ( Saturday) after a battle with leukaemia.

Cindy’s passing marks the end of a journey defined not by illness, but by extraordinary resilience, determination, and grace.

Unwavering commitment to her education, despite her illness

Even as she endured years of treatment, repeated hospital admissions, and most recently a bone marrow transplant at PPUM, Cindy never allowed her circumstances to define her aspirations. With only her industrial training remaining before completing her studies, she continued attending online classes whenever her health permitted and diligently completed her assignments.

Behind every academic achievement was a young woman who chose to keep moving forward, even when every step demanded tremendous courage. Her resilience serves as a lasting reminder that the absence of hardship does not measure true strength, but by the resolve to continue despite it.

Following her passing, Cindy was brought back to her hometown in Perlis, where family and friends gathered to bid her a final farewell.

The university extended financial aid to the family

According to an official statement, during this time of profound grief, the Faculty of Language & Linguistics and the University of Malaya have extended financial assistance to support her family, reflecting the compassion and solidarity of the university community.

Although Cindy’s journey was far too brief, the impact she leaves behind will endure. Her determination, kindness, and steadfast pursuit of her dreams have touched countless lives and will continue to inspire those who knew her and those who hear her story.

May Cindy Wong Xin Yee rest in eternal peace. She will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever cherished.
