Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has underscored Umno’s central role in sustaining political stability and advancing the reform agenda under Malaysia’s Unity Government, describing the party as a key pillar in ensuring orderly governance and national cohesion.
Speaking in Rawang on 6 January 2026, Saifuddin Nasution, who also serves as Pakatan Harapan secretary-general, said Umno’s participation has been instrumental in stabilising the administration after years of political turbulence. He pointed out that Umno remains the largest Malay-based party within the ruling coalition, with 30 Members of Parliament and eight full ministerial portfolios, a presence that reflects both influence and responsibility within the government.
According to him, the political maturity shown by Umno’s leadership has helped foster unity across coalition partners and enabled the government to function more effectively. This stability, he noted, stands in sharp contrast to the previous parliamentary term, which saw Malaysia led by three different prime ministers over five years. In comparison, the current administration has been governed by a single prime minister for nearly three years, creating a more predictable and focused governing environment.
Saifuddin Nasution said such continuity has allowed the government to concentrate on long-term reforms, economic recovery and institutional improvements. He added that the benefits of this stability are increasingly visible through positive economic indicators and more structured policymaking, which together signal a healthier trajectory for national development.
He also commented on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recent announcement to limit the prime ministerial tenure to a maximum of 10 years. Saifuddin Nasution described the move as a clear demonstration of accountability and responsible leadership, noting that it strikes a balance between preventing excessive concentration of power and providing adequate time to implement meaningful reforms and policies.
Expressing confidence in Umno’s leadership, Saifuddin Nasution said the party’s decision to position itself within the Unity Government reflected political wisdom in navigating Malaysia’s evolving landscape. He stressed that despite differing views within component parties, the coalition remains united, stable and fully operational.
His remarks came days after Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh addressed delegates at the Umno Youth Special Convention held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur on 3 January 2026. During the gathering, Akmal reiterated the youth wing’s rejection of any attempt to seize power through undemocratic means or manoeuvres that could destabilise the current government.
Overall, Saifuddin Nasution maintained that Umno’s continued engagement in the Unity Government has been a stabilising force, reinforcing institutional continuity while allowing the administration to pursue reforms aimed at long-term national progress.
