We are surprised when Ahmad Maslan UMNO's Secretary-General said that actions by BERSATU and PAS indirectly showed that they had no confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Ahmad Maslan described the action taken by 12 ministers from Perikatan Nasional (PN) to send a letter to the King expressing their objection against a move to hold the 15th general election (GE15) this year as inappropriate showing a sign of no confidence in the PM.
As a result, he said that the government’s legitimacy has been eroded to 60% now just because of this petition. But he neglected to say how that is measured.
Why would UMNO consider a petition by a group of MPs from a member of the ruling coalition to the King as an indication of non confidence in the PM?
What about UMNO itself that should be chastised for undermining a PM from their own ranks by insinuating that his government has lost its legitimacy just because of a petition?
On the other hand, BERSATU itself has made very clear that the petition has nothing to do with a question of confidence in Ismail Sabri as a PM or the legitimacy of the government of the day that he leads.
However, if you were to examine the whole process that has led us to this juncture it is UMNO itself that should be blamed for putting so much pressure on Ismail Sabri driving him into a corner just because UMNO leadership would like to have an election in thunder, lightening, rains and floods to regain power.
If Ismail Sabri was to be UMNO's poster boy in coming elections putting him into a corner and undermining the government that he helms is just like cutting off the nose to spite the face.
UMNO's leadership is hurting themselves rather than the Opposition that they hope to hurt by labelling the latter as trying to erode the legitimacy of the government by petitioning the Agong not to consent to a snap election during the monsoon.
UMNO's leadership does not seem to realise or even care that it will hurt themselves as well while they target BERSATU who are merely expressing their views to the highest authority in the land in the interest of the people.
Guess who'll come through this fine mess smelling like a rose? Do you think it'll be UMNO's Secretary General?
