Umno has officially acknowledged the decision of the Federal Territories Pardons Board to reduce the sentence of Datuk Seri Najib Razak, the former Umno president, stating that it respects the discretion of the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah. While not obtaining a full pardon, Umno's supreme council, in a statement after a lengthy meeting, declared its commitment to pursuing justice for Najib in line with the country’s legal framework. This position reiterates a resolution established during the previous annual general assembly.
Expressing appreciation for the decision, Umno emphasized its ongoing efforts to secure justice for Najib, urging Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, a member of the Pardons Board, to support these endeavors. The party's resolve remains rooted in the pursuit of justice within the bounds of the law.
The Federal Territories Pardons Board recently disclosed its decision to halve Najib’s prison term related to the misappropriation of RM42 million from a former 1MDB unit. Additionally, his fine was reduced from RM210 million to RM50 million. This adjustment implies that Najib, who commenced his prison sentence in August 2022, is expected to be released by 2028. Notably, he might be eligible for parole after serving two-thirds of the six-year sentence based on good behavior.
The official statement from the Federal Territories Pardons Board, released by the Prime Minister’s Department’s Legal Affairs Division as the board’s secretariat, clarified that the decision was reached during the January 29 meeting. Chaired by the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, the meeting considered five pardon applications, including Najib’s.
According to the Federal Constitution, the Agong leads the Pardons Board meetings for the federal territories, comprising the attorney general, the Federal Territories minister, and a maximum of three other members appointed by the Agong. This legal framework underscores the constitutional process behind such decisions, emphasizing the role of key authorities in the review and determination of pardons.
