In a statement today, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim acknowledged his involvement in ensuring that Datuk Seri Najib Razak's application reached the Pardons Board. He stated that it was his duty as prime minister to do so. However, he denied expediting the convicted former prime minister's application, as reported by news portal Free Malaysia Today.

"I acknowledge responsibility for ensuring that the application was heard," Anwar said during the monthly assembly of the Prime Minister's Department. He emphasized that it is the responsibility of the prime minister to ensure prompt attention to all pardon applications received, including Najib's.

Anwar refuted claims that the Pardons Board considers applications only after the convict has served three years of the sentence. He explained that the board follows procedures in hearing submitted applications.

Regarding public demand for an open explanation from the Pardons Board regarding Najib's case, Anwar urged restraint, stating that the decision had been made by the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah based on the law.

Under the Federal Constitution, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong chairs the meetings of the Pardons Board for the federal territories, which includes the attorney general, the Federal Territories minister, and a maximum of three other members appointed by the Agong.

Anwar emphasized Agong's discretion to grant pardons and his prerogative whether to explain the grounds of his decision or not. He urged calm and acceptance of what is provided in the Federal Constitution.

"We should refrain from demanding explanations from the Pardons Board chaired by the Agong, as the final decision ultimately rests with him," Anwar stated.

Najib was found guilty of abusing his position and misappropriating RM42 million belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd, a former 1MDB subsidiary. He was sentenced to 12 years in jail and a fine of RM210 million, beginning his jail time on August 23, 2022.

On February 2, the Pardons Board halved Najib's jail sentence to six years and reduced the fine amount to RM50 million. The decision drew discontent from both Najib's supporters, who had hoped for a full pardon, and his detractors.

The decision to reduce Najib's sentence and fine sparked mixed reactions. Supporters of the former Umno president expressed disappointment, hoping for a full pardon. On the other hand, critics of Najib voiced dissatisfaction with what they perceived as a lenient outcome.

Anwar's acknowledgement of his role in Najib's pardon application sheds light on the complexities and responsibilities of high-ranking officials in the Malaysian government. As the country navigates through these legal processes, it remains essential for transparency and adherence to constitutional procedures to ensure public trust and accountability.

The case also underscores the significance of the Pardons Board's role in the justice system, highlighting the balance between upholding the law and considering compassionate grounds for pardon. The discretion granted to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in these matters reflects the constitutional framework designed to uphold the rule of law while allowing for flexibility in exceptional cases.

As the public awaits further developments in Najib's case, the spotlight remains on the judicial system and the principles guiding the pardon process. Clarity and transparency in these processes are crucial for maintaining public confidence in the fairness and integrity of Malaysia's legal system.

**Continuation**:

The case has also reignited discussions about the broader implications of pardon applications and the criteria used to evaluate them. While the Pardons Board operates within legal frameworks, there is room for debate on how decisions are made and the factors considered in granting or reducing sentences.

Najib's case, given its high-profile nature and the political dynamics surrounding it, has become a focal point for scrutiny and debate. It has raised questions about the intersection of politics and the judiciary, as well as the extent to which public opinion and political considerations influence pardon decisions.

Moving forward, the handling of Najib's case will continue to be closely monitored, not only for its legal implications but also for its potential impact on Malaysia's political landscape. The outcome of this case could set precedents for future pardon applications and shape public perceptions of the justice system's fairness and impartiality.

Ultimately, the handling of high-profile cases like Najib's underscores the importance of transparency, accountability, and adherence to legal principles in ensuring public trust in Malaysia's institutions. As the country navigates through these complex legal matters, it will be crucial to uphold these principles to uphold the rule of law and maintain public confidence in the justice system.
