The UMNO Supreme Council urges BN leaders and machinery to campaign with decorum in the Melaka state election and avoid defamatory or insulting remarks.

KUALA LUMPUR: The UMNO Supreme Council has urged Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders and campaign machinery to conduct their campaign for next month’s Melaka state election with decorum and good conduct.

UMNO secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the coalition must refrain from making defamatory or insulting remarks and using offensive language against rival parties.

He said this was among the resolutions reached at the UMNO Supreme Council meeting chaired by party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at Menara Dato’ Onn here last night.

“The Supreme Council also agreed to formalise political cooperation with PAS and other Perikatan Nasional (PN) component parties for the Melaka state election,” he told reporters at a press conference after the meeting.

He said the party’s entire election machinery and supporters had also been instructed to extend their full support to PN candidates contesting the state seats allocated to the coalition.

Asyraf Wajdi said the meeting also agreed that BN and PN would launch a joint election manifesto aimed at providing the best possible services to the people.

He said the joint manifesto was expected to be unveiled on the afternoon of nomination day, with any changes to the schedule to be announced later.

Nomination day for the Melaka state election is set for this Saturday (Oct 31), with early voting scheduled for Nov 10 and polling day on Nov 14.
