KOTA KINABALU (May 8): The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) UMS Student Section of Universiti Malaysia Sabah successfully organised the “Shell Case Study X UMS: Imagine the Future of Late-Life Asset Excellence” programme on May 6 as part of IEM’s continuous commitment towards developing competent, industry-ready future engineers in Sabah.

Organised under the leadership and initiative of IEM UMS Student Section, the programme reflected IEM’s dedication in bridging the gap between academia and industry by providing engineering students with practical exposure to real-world engineering challenges, particularly within the oil and gas sector.

The programme was held in collaboration with Shell Malaysia, Engineering Student Society (ESSoc) and the Faculty of Engineering Student Representative Council (MPP FKJ).

It gathered about 50 engineering students from Universiti Malaysia Sabah and served as a platform for IEM to cultivate critical thinking, engineering judgement, technical communication, and problem-solving skills among future engineers.

Through this initiative, the program aimed to inspire more Sabahan students to actively explore engineering career opportunities within the energy industry while strengthening their understanding of professional engineering practices.

A key highlight of the programme was the engineering case study challenge conducted in collaboration with Shell Malaysia.

Participating students were provided with a late-life asset case study four days prior to the programme, requiring them to evaluate operational challenges involving an offshore oil and gas platform experiencing increasing produced water and declining operational efficiency.

Students were tasked with proposing engineering solutions, investment strategies, and mitigation plans to sustain production and optimise asset performance.

During the programme, participants presented their solutions before a panel of experienced industry professionals from Shell Malaysia, namely Conrad Thomas, Tay Tze-Shing, John Fung, and Liz Kumar.

The session provided valuable exposure to professional engineering discussions, technical evaluation processes, and industry-level decision-making, in line with IEM’s objective of producing holistic and competent future engineers.

In addition to the technical case study session, the programme also featured a career-sharing session on the Shell Graduate Programme (SGP).

Shell graduate engineers Enoch Jauw, Ho Tze Jing, Darren Arvin, and Shafika Yusup shared their professional journeys and experiences as young engineers in the industry.
The session further strengthened IEM’s efforts in guiding engineering students towards professional development and career readiness.

The closing ceremony was graced by Faculty of Engineering Dean, Associate Professor Ir Dr Abu Zahrim Yaser; Deputy Dean (Student Affairs and Alumni) Associate Professor Ir Dr Mohd Azizul Ladin; IEM Sabah committee member Ir Wah Kheng Haw; and IEM YES Sabah Graduates and Student Leader Ts Dr Nurul Shahadatul.

Their presence symbolised the strong support and collaboration between academia, professional engineering bodies, and industry partners in nurturing the next generation of engineers.

The programme concluded successfully with highly positive feedback from the participants, who expressed appreciation for the valuable engineering exposure and industry engagement bridged by IEM.

The collaboration between IEM Sabah, UMS Faculty of Engineering and Shell Malaysia demonstrated a shared commitment towards empowering future engineering talents, strengthening industry-academia relationships, and advancing the development of the engineering profession in Sabah.

The success of the programme was made possible through the dedication and leadership of the IEM UMS Student Section organising committee led by Programme Director Efrain Harris Modoit alongside Izzat Aiman Mat Saidi, with the continuous support of all committee members and collaborators involved in the programme.
