AN unemployed man pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to a charge of illegally keeping a protected monkey species at his home without a valid licence.
Mukarab Khan Guldad, 51, denied the charge when it was read before Judge Siti Shakirah Mohtarudin.
The accused is alleged to have kept a pig-tailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina), a species protected under the First Schedule of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010, at his residence in PPR Kampung Batu Muda, Batu 5, Jalan Ipoh, on 2 July at approximately 3.30 p.m.
The charge is framed under Section 60(1)(a) of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 [Act 716], and is punishable under Section 60(1) of the same Act, which provides for a maximum sentence of three years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM50,000, or both, upon conviction.
Defence counsel Zulkifli Awang requested that no bail be imposed, stating that his client intends to file a representation to the Attorney General’s Chambers.
The application was not opposed by Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) prosecuting officer Suhainariddah Abd Rashid, and the court granted the request.
The case is scheduled for mention on 15 November. - September 25, 2025
