YANGON - Nearly 3.8 million people were internally displaced across Myanmar by the end of June, UNICEF said in a mid-year report released September 16.
The UNICEF Myanmar Humanitarian Situation Report put the total at 3,793,800 as of June 29, citing UNHCR. UNICEF’s end-2025 report listed 3,639,400 internally displaced people as of December 29, making the mid-year figure exactly 154,400 higher.
The report said 16.2 million people, including 4.9 million children, needed humanitarian assistance in 2026.
Displacement increased further after June. UNHCR’s Myanmar data portal subsequently listed 4,031,000 internally displaced people as of August 10, including 1,346,100 in Sagaing Region.
UNICEF said more than 1.8 million people remained internally displaced in northwestern Myanmar during the reporting period.
More than 100,000 people had been displaced across four Magway townships since mid-May, while the number of internally displaced people in the southeast exceeded 945,000 by the end of June, the highest level recorded there since 2021.
An estimated 3.4 million children needed urgent education support. UNICEF said 327 landmine and explosive-ordnance incidents were reported in the first half of the year, causing 487 civilian casualties, including 113 children.
UNICEF and partners also said they provided education support to 472,742 children and primary health care to 326,503 people between January and June.
The agency appealed for $267.2 million to assist 3.3 million people in 2026 and had $95.4 million available at mid-year. UNICEF reported a $171.7 million funding gap, or 64%. Drawing on UNHCR data through the end of May, the report said another 1.6 million people from Myanmar were refugees or asylum seekers in neighbouring countries, separate from those displaced inside the country.
Conditions continued to change after the report’s cutoff. UNICEF estimated that monsoon flooding had affected about 600,000 people by the end of August across parts of northwestern Myanmar, Rakhine, Ayeyarwady and Kachin, displacing families and damaging homes and infrastructure.
