KUCHING (April 19): Party components of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) have been urged to close ranks and consolidate electoral support ahead of the upcoming state election to preserve the state’s unity and political stability under the coalition.

According to Parti Rakyat Sarawak president Dato Sri John Sikie Tayai, unity is crucial to ensuring that the coalition’s political dominance remains intact in the state.

“One of Sarawak’s greatest strengths today is our unity and political stability through GPS. We believe that it is the strength of GPS in the state legislature and the unity of the GPS government that has earned Sarawak the respect and attention from the federal government.

“But the dominance of GPS in the state legislature and the strong GPS government are not invulnerable. An opposition causing a GPS component to lose a seat would weaken GPS by that much,” he cautioned when adressing at the GPS Convention 2026 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching today.

The Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department also called on party components to safeguard Sarawak’s rights and interests within Malaysia, as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

“They represent the foundation upon which our partnership within Malaysia was built,” he added.

He further expressed confidence in the support of other coalition members.

“The smaller and not-so-well-endowed component of GPS, such as us in PRS, are worried all the time, seeing danger looming on the horizon as the state election becomes closer.

“However, we comfort ourselves with the hope that our partners in the GPS will stay together behind us, ensuring each other’s State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seats are safeguarded together, in order to achieve total domination by GPS in the state legislature,” he remarked.

He added that only through GPS’ dominance in the state legislature, and by maintaining a strong state government, can Sarawak secure the attention and respect of the federal government.

“Maintaining strong state government is the common concern of all the GPS component parties,” he said.
