A 30-year-old youth, identified as Manjinder Singh, was shot dead by unknown motorcycle-borne persons at Jabbowal village falling under Tarsikka police station here on Friday night.

The victim – who runs an agriculture store – was returning home on his bike when the incident took place. The police have got some CCTV footage of the suspects but it was inconclusive due to darkness in the area. He is survived by his wife and seven-month-old child.

Manjit Singh, Station House Officer, Tarsikka police station, said efforts were on to identify and arrest the culprits. He said a case had been registered on the statement of the victim’s father Avtar Singh.

According to information, the accused fired around eight gunshots at the victim, out of which four hit his back, leaving him critically wounded. The people rushed to spot after hearing the gunshots and found him lying on the road. Immediately, they informed his family and rushed him to hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The SHO said that after closing the shop, Manjider was returning home on his bike. When he turned towards the road leading to his house, two bike-borne persons arrived on the scene and intercepted him. Before he could understand anything, they fired bullets at him.

His body has been kept in a mortuary for a post-mortem. The family was waiting for his elder brother Gurjinder Singh, who lives in Australia.
