Kota Kinabalu: Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) won the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA) 2026 at national level through its Kota Kinabalu Urban Garden Project.
Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah said DBKK received the Government Category (Green Initiative Award) and was the only local authority in Sabah to be recognised.
He said the achievement reflected the success of an approach centred on community participation and environmental sustainability.
“It is proof of DBKK’s continuous efforts to expand community engagement through smart community initiatives and the development of urban gardens.
“This forms part of our efforts to strengthen environmental sustainability awareness while empowering public participation in urban development.
“These initiatives have yielded encouraging results,” he said.
Dr Sabin announced the recognition when officiating the launch of Landscape Day and Kota Kinabalu Heritage Trail 2026.
The MLAA is the highest recognition platform for the landscape architecture profession in Malaysia, organised by the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM).
This year’s event brought together more than 700 landscape industry players from Malaysia and abroad, with more than 120 entries competing across 20 award categories.
