Urgent action needed to tackle challenges facing Malaysia’s elderly, urges Lee Lam Thye

THE recent National Senior Citizen Day 2025 highlighted pressing issues confronting Malaysia’s ageing population, including healthcare access, financial insecurity, the digital divide, and elder abuse.

The Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye described senior citizens as the “pillars of society,” having contributed decades of dedication and wisdom to families and institutions. Yet, he warned, “many still struggle with issues that demand urgent attention.”

“As the nation observes National Senior Citizen Day on October 5, 2025, communities across Malaysia and around the world are urged to reflect on the invaluable contributions of older adults and to confront the challenges they continue to face with empathy and resolve,” Lee said in a statement.

He highlighted rising medical costs and limited geriatric services as factors that leave many seniors vulnerable, calling for “more inclusive and affordable healthcare tailored to the ageing population.”

Loneliness and depression were cited as growing concerns, with Lee stressing the importance of prioritising community engagement and mental health support to safeguard emotional well-being.

On the economic front, Lee pointed to inadequate pensions, inflation, and age discrimination in employment as threats to retirees’ financial stability. He emphasised the need for stronger protections and inclusive economic policies to address these issues.

Concern was also raised over the digital divide, with Lee advocating for accessible technology and training programmes to empower seniors to stay connected and informed in an increasingly digital world.

Every elderly person, he said, deserves dignity and safety, and urged for awareness campaigns and legal safeguards to prevent elder abuse and ensure justice.

“This day is not just a celebration, it’s a reminder that ageing should be embraced, not feared. Our elders deserve more than respect; they deserve action.

“National Senior Citizen Day is a call to policymakers, communities and individuals to build a society where ageing is met with dignity, security and joy,” Lee add.

“Let us honour our elders not only with words, but with meaningful changes.” - October 5, 2025
