Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa has strongly criticized hydration breaks at the World Cup.

FIFA brought them in because of player welfare concerns amid the North American heat but fans have started to boo the drinks stoppages, especially in stadiums with roofs.

Broadcasters have been accused of profiting from the breaks by adding extra adverts, effectively making football into quarters like NFL and NBA, while games have seen big momentum shifts after the stoppages as coaches use them to tweak tactics.

"They do nothing and take a lot away from football. I only want to say that football had a certain character before this decision, now it has a different one," the Argentinian was quoted as saying by various media on Sunday.

"We did not think about the consequences for the sport, but rather about another kind of impact," Bielsa said, hinting at commercial reasons. "The conclusions I present are not my own. I hear them again and again and agree with them."

Uruguay drew 1-1 with Saudi Arabia in their opener and next meet Cape Verde in a few hours in Miami.
