US airport reignites debate over travel apparel as it ‘bans’ clothing item

  • An airport in Florida has sparked fresh debate over airport etiquette months after Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy urged travelers to smarten up their wardrobes when flying.
  • The Transportation Department launched a campaign, The Golden Age of Travel Starts with You, in November, with Duffy stating, “Whether it’s a pair of jeans and a decent shirt. I would encourage people to maybe dress a little better, which maybe encourages us to maybe behave all a little better.”
  • “Let’s try not to wear slippers and pajamas as we come to the airport,” he continued.
  • On Thursday, the Tampa International Airport shared a post on X that said in part, “It’s time to ban pajamas. ... After successfully banning Crocs and giving everyone the amazing opportunity to experience the world’s first Crocs-free airport, it’s time to take on an even larger crisis.”
  • Hundreds of replies poured in, with travelers voicing their support of and opposition to the suggestion.
