Two soldiers, one from the United States and one from the United Kingdom, died during a training accident in northern Iraq, the UK defence minister and the US Army said in separate statements on Monday.

Defence Secretary John Healey told the UK House of Commons that "a training accident occurred in northern Iraq yesterday in which a service personnel from the British Army has died."

Healey said that the soldier's family had been informed. He did not provide any further details.

Separately, the US Army said in a brief statement that a US soldier died during a military training exercise at Erbil Air Base. The base, which hosts US troops, is in Iraq's Kurdistan region near Erbil international airport.

"The training was conducted with our British Army partners who also lost a soldier," US Army Central and Third Army said, adding that the incident was under investigation.
