US Central Command (CENTCOM) chief Brad Cooper has met Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in Beirut to discuss implementation of the framework agreement reached with Israel in Washington a few days ago, the Lebanese presidency said on Monday.

Cooper also met the commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces, Rodolphe Haykal, according to CENTCOM. No further details were initially available.

The Lebanese and Israeli governments agreed on Friday on a path to peace and security after decades of a state of war.

However, the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia has rejected the agreement. Hezbollah was not involved in the negotiations and has flatly rejected the disarmament of non-state groups envisaged under the deal.

Under the framework agreement, Israel is not required to withdraw fully from southern Lebanon until non-state groups such as Hezbollah have been disarmed - a condition rejected by the leadership in Tehran and by Hezbollah.
