The US military has begun launching retaliatory strikes against Iran in response to the downing of a US military helicopter, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said.
The strikes were ordered by US President Donald Trump, CENTCOM said on X.
"The mission is a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression," the US military said, adding that the attacks began at 5 pm US Eastern Time (2100 GMT) on Tuesday.
CENTCOM initially gave no further details on the scale of the strikes.
Earlier, Trump said Iran had shot down a US military helicopter. The United States had to respond to the attack, he said.
The two pilots of the downed Apache helicopter were unharmed and safe.
According to Iran's Mehr news agency, residents reported explosions in and around the port city of Sirik, though they could not be clearly attributed.
