US Open tennis star gives brutally honest verdict on Nick Kyrgios’ cocaine ban

  • Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has been suspended by the International Tennis Integrity Agency after testing positive for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, following a drugs test in Mallorca in June.
  • Former world No 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas stated that the positive test result was “pretty much expected” and claimed he was already aware of Kyrgios's off-court behaviour from others on the tour prior to the official announcement.
  • Kyrgios apologised to fans and sponsors for his actions, describing the positive test as a “huge mistake” while explaining that severe injury struggles had taken a heavy physical and mental toll on him.
  • The Australian athlete announced he is stepping away from public life and social media for 28 days to focus on getting himself right following the ITIA suspension.
  • Tsitsipas shared his comments regarding Kyrgios shortly after producing a major shock at the US Open by defeating 10th seed Arthur Fils in the first round.
