The deliberations at PVATM resolved that “By taking control of what veterans do & how we do it, we can make the best small business idea even more successful.” Photo: Zarina

I have the highest respect to the veterans of Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) including the Royal Malaysian Police for their significant contributions in protecting our country from aggression and terrorism. Their primary role is to maintaining peace & be prepared to any armed conflict in order to effectively depend Malaysia's sovereignty, territorial integrity and national interests against external threats. I understand veterans of MAF, both pensioners and non-pensioners, are eligible to receive Welfare and Education Assistance offered by the Government. It was created to ease the burden of MAF veterans and their family based on Poverty Line Income. This aid is for temporary assistance managed by MAF Department of Veteran Affairs under the Ministry of Defense, Malaysia. (www.jhev.gov.my)

With the auspicies of Lt. Jeneral Dato' Wira Masood Zainal Abidin (Rtd), Advisor of Veteran Association of Malaysian Armed Forces (PVATM) Putrajaya Branch, I had the rare opportunity to visit its ‘war room’ & engaged in conversations with Chairman Mahadie Chan Abdullah. His leadership team is strategising with the veterans involved in small business in setting-up ‘Lemang & Rendang' stall for Bazaar Ramadan. It is a delicious combination of glutinous rice cooked in bamboo and tender, flavour beef and chicken with rich spices. (pvatmcawanganputrajaya@gmail.com)

According to Secretary Mahadie Chan that veterans with small business ownership are often a mix of ‘push’ and ‘pull’ factors. He said, "Some of these motivations make the veterans better equipped to manage their business than others. In most cases, for veterans in business to achieve financial goals were more likely involved in strategic planning than veterans who're motivated by lifestyle change. Those 'pushed' into small business ownership driven by personal achievement goals have showned a greater likelihood to succeed."

As the World Union of Small and Medium Entreprises (WUSME) Ambassador in Malaysia, I concur with the guidance by Sec Mahadie that strategic entrepreneurship planning is a vital part of business success to improve the performance of these veterans' businesses.
