A short video in Malaysia can cost RM40 or RM2,500. Length tells you nothing about which.
Video editing cost in Malaysia in 2026 starts around RM40 to RM150 for a short clip cut from footage you own, RM150 to RM500 for a podcast episode, and RM4,000 to RM15,000 for a motion graphics explainer. The price follows how much has to be built on screen, not how long the video runs.
Both are real, and they are not the same product. A beginner on r/malaysians charged RM40 to edit a one-minute Reels ad. In a 2023 thread, a videographer shooting and editing a 30-second coffee clip was working toward about RM1,000 for 42 hours, and was told he should be asking RM2,000 to RM2,500. Editing was 20 of those hours. An hourly rate never tells you which product you are buying.

What video editing costs in Malaysia, by video type
Every guide ranking for this query prices by the hour or the shoot day. Neither converts into a budget. Here is what Malaysian sources publish:

The jump from RM500 to RM8,000 is the lesson. Everything above the corporate row edits footage that already exists. Ignore the last row: when published hourly rates span fifty times over, the hour is not a unit you can budget with.

Why length barely moves video editing cost in Malaysia
A five-minute podcast trim is cheaper than a 90-second explainer. That sounds wrong until you see what each asks for.
The podcast already happened. Someone talked for an hour, a camera recorded it, and the work is picking which stretch is worth keeping once the sound is fixed. The raw material is free because you already paid for it.
The explainer starts with nothing. Every screen is designed and every movement timed by hand, so 20 animated beats is 20 small design jobs. The podcast is one long selection job. That is why the short one costs more.

Four things push a quote up, and duration is not among them:
- Animated screens and charts are design hours before editing hours.
- Bad audio, mixed sources, or a file pulled off Instagram cost time to rescue.
- Revisions with no agreed ceiling. One editor on r/malaysians puts the trade's underestimate at half the revision hours or more, and the burned ones price that in. Agree two rounds in writing and the number drops.
- Every extra aspect ratio is another export and caption pass.
Freelancer or studio, and what you give up
A freelancer costs less per video and often cares more, since you are a bigger share of their month. What you give up is cover. One person gets sick, takes a better job, or goes quiet over a festive week, and your schedule goes too. Part of a studio's premium is a second editor who can pick up the file.
Our honest read: if the job is a weekly Short and a three-day slip costs nothing, hire a freelancer. If it has a launch date, pay for cover. Most Malaysian businesses we talk to need the first and shop for the second, then wonder why the quote hurt.
How long it takes, and what you should get back
Get deliverables in writing before paying a deposit. These assume an approved cut plan:

Insist on two things: a separate caption file, since burned-in captions cannot be fixed later, and a named number of revision rounds, since that is what disputed invoices turn on.
AI changed the first half of this work and left the second alone. Transcription and rough cuts are faster, which is why we think honest short-form prices have softened. Deciding what the video is about, and whether a caption matches what was said, is still a person's job. A quote claiming AI removed that is quoting for a different product.
