KUALA LUMPUR – Vietnam national head coach Kim Sang-sik has identified Malaysia’s Sergio Aguero and Declan Lambert as key threats ahead of their 2027 Asian Cup qualifier clash against Harimau Malaya.
His comments came after both players delivered standout performances for the Asean All Stars — a side he led to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Maybank Challenge Cup at Bukit Jalil National Stadium yesterday.
Both players, who featured in the first half, were flawless in defence and gave no room for United’s experienced side to launch attacks.
Lambert, who plays for Kuala Lumpur City FC, even pulled off a crucial goal-line clearance to keep out a shot from Kobbie Mainoo.
Aguero, captain of Sri Pahang FC, wore the armband for the All Stars and was substituted in the 54th minute.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Sang-sik said his coaching staff would be monitoring the pair closely in the lead-up to Vietnam’s meeting with Malaysia.
“They were really impressive in the match, and I truly admire the way they controlled the game against United,” said Sang-sik.
“They were strong on the ball, and they’ve improved a lot since the last time I saw them.
“I’m happy for them — speaking as the All Stars coach — but as Vietnam’s head coach, I certainly see them as a threat. We’ll need to study them carefully before facing Malaysia.”
Malaysia are set to host Vietnam at Bukit Jalil National Stadium on June 10.
Harimau Malaya will be hoping to end a five-match losing streak against Vietnam, who beat them 3–0 in their most recent encounter at the 2022 Asean Cup.
