BEAUFORT: Villagers of Kampung Kabajang are pleading with the government to urgently repair a dilapidated bridge that serves as their main route to town.
Sipitang Warisan Wira Head, Mohammad Norizhuan Awang, said more than 50 residents rely on the bridge for their daily activities.
“During a community outreach programme, I had the chance to listen to villagers who are deeply concerned about the bridge’s poor condition, which appears to be on the verge of collapse.
“Imagine crossing a bridge that feels life-threatening every day. Children heading to school, the elderly, and parents trying to earn a living are all forced to take this risk,” he told Daily Express.
He added that pregnant women also use the bridge to walk to the nearby clinic for medical check-ups.
One of the villagers, Mohidden Husin, said the request for repairs was submitted two years ago, but the only response they’ve received is the outdated excuse of “no allocation.”“It’s heartbreaking and completely unreasonable. Every year, the government announces billion-ringgit allocations, yet a small bridge, which wouldn’t even cost hundreds of thousands, receives no attention.
“The question remains: where exactly has the money gone? Are the lives of villagers so undervalued that their safety is being ignored?” he said.
