MANILA Philppines — The land donated by the Villar family to the Department of Transportation (DOTr) for the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) Cavite Extension is expected to make public transport "more accessible" for residents living south of Metro Manila, according to Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC) Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan.
In a statement, Pangilinan said improved transport connectivity could "help address the gap between residential communities in the outskirts of the capital and employment opportunities concentrated in Metro Manila."
“I think it will help out the population in the outlying areas if you have good public transportation because the jobs are here in Manila, right?” he said.
Pangilinan added that better connectivity would "allow people living farther from major employment centers to access jobs without having to shoulder the higher costs associated with living closer to workplaces."
“When you close it to the jobs, you save on expenses. But you need to have a good public transportation,” the MPIC chairman said.
The Villar family's land donation to the DOTr is intended to support infrastructure for the LRT-1 Cavite Extension, which is expected too improve access between Cavite communities and the capital, giving commuters an alternative to road-based transportation and potentially reducing the time and cost of daily travel.
Pangilinan said these investments in public transportation could "help make economic opportunities more accessible" for those living in outlying areas.
