An elderly vendor in Port Dickson recently slammed his petai (stinky beans) onto the ground as a protest when he was told to stop trading on his motorcycle in the area by the enforcement officers.
It didn’t take long for the Port Dickson Municipal Council to visit the elderly and grant him a temporary licence, and here’s what many may not know.
He was earning some money to bear the cost of his wife’s surgery
67-year-old Mohd Noor Saad said the stinky beans mean a lot when it comes to his survival. Unfortunately, he can’t sell it every day, as it depends on the stock that he gets from the indigenous people in Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan.
“Other than petai, I sometimes sell pucuk ubi (Cassava leaves) for my wife’s eye surgery. She can’t see due to cataract issues.”
When asked about his children, the senior citizen said he didn’t want to trouble his children for as long as he could move.
“My son and daughter are both married. The former is working a regular job, and the latter is a housewife.”
“I don’t want to trouble them, and I get RM500 from the Social Welfare Department (JKM) every month,” reported Sinar Harian.
Saad usually brings 30 bundles of Petai and sells 6 strips for RM10.
Meanwhile, he hopes the issue will not continue to escalate because the Port Dickson Municipal Council (MPPD) and the enforcement officers involved have already been to his house to clarify the situation.
Saad also admitted that he was angry during the viral incident, but grew calmer when he was home.
The viral video gained much attention from Malaysian netizens, who expressed sympathy in seeing the incident.
